Backyard Transformation – Pulling the Trigger

My wife and I have been talking about what our dream outdoor spaces would look like since shortly after we moved into our home in November 2008. A large patio, an outdoor kitchen, covered lounge space, comfy furniture, some citrus trees, and great lighting have all been in our imagination for our space.

After spending a LOT of time at home during the COVID pandemic from March 2020 through mid-2021, we finally decided that it was time to plan for our backyard transformation project so that we could enjoy our new space. In Summer 2021, not knowing any contractors in the area, I searched online, got references from some local outdoor living stores, and finally contacted Joel & Sons Landscape Construction in Covina, CA based on their excellent Yelp reviews. Joel is the owner and met with my wife and me at our home. We shared our vision for the project with him and he offered some great suggestions. He took some measurements of our property and let us know that we’d be hearing from him soon. Before he left he did let us know that his backlog was 8-9 months at the time. This was going to be a very long wait, but something told us that Joel was the right guy for the job. We had waited 13 years at that point; no harm in waiting a little while longer. A couple weeks later we received a quote, but it took us until the end of September to decide to sign the the proposal and send it back.

Then we waited…and waited…and waited…to hear when we would make it to the top of Joel’s project board.

I checked in every few months and always received a prompt response. Due to pandemic supply chain issues and customers expanding their projects, we had some delays and our estimated Spring 2022 start date turned into a mid-Summer start date. Joel’s team was very open and communicative even before the project started.

So, after nearly 14 years in our home in Southern California, we are finally embarking on a major outdoor space renovation project!

They’re here!
